Release Date, er, Released

Audible has set the release date for book 3, “All These Worlds” to be August 8, 2017. The e-book will be released on the same date, and the print version might be a day or two later, because of delays between Createspace and Amazon.

Also, an update to my earlier post: Audible will be re-recording parts of book 1 to bring pronunciations in line with book 2.

But… the pronunciations in book two weren’t even consistent.

The most notable example I can recall is “air-IH-deh-nee” versus “air-ih-DAH-nee”.

Not that I don’t love the books… I’m obsessed with them and have turned at least 5 other people into shameless fans as well.

Can’t wait for August 8th. Thanks Dennis!!

To clarify, I recall both pronunciations in Book 2.

      1. If that’s the case, Ray may have slipped into the old pronunciation a time or two. I’ll bring it up with Audible.

Yes I noticed that as well. And I also noticed that Archimedes was pronounced correctly in the first book but incorrectly in the second book.

These are great books and the narrator is pretty awesome dispite these little discrepancies! I’m enjoying them immensely. Can’t wait to hear the next!

I think….both pronunciations are wrong. Every reference I’ve ever heard pronounces it E-era-danny, not
e-ariddnee It bugs me a bit, but the books are so good I don’t care that much 😀 I’m a fan of the Live Free or Die (Troy) series and in the middle of the first book Mark Boyett went from the 1st pronunciation to the 2nd.

Oh well…can’t wait for the 3rd Bob book….Great Listen!!! Great Book!!!

  2. Can’t wait for the movie 😛

    Mr. Taylor,

I bought the first audiobook on Amazon. It was an MP3 CD. Loved it. Thank you.

I have been holding out for an MP3 CD of the second book. Nothing so far… just the Audible version. Wondering if a CD is coming out soon, or at all.

    1. I remember that the CD for book 1 took a couple of months to be produced. I had preordered one, and I believe it didn’t arrive until January 2017. So, yeah, big delay. No idea why.

What I’d really like to see, rather than just a standard hard-cover, would be a nice leather bound collection of the trilogy. Something like from Easton Press or Franklin Books. At least so far, this is one of my favorite sci-fi stories ever, and I’d definitely love to include it with my other leather-bounds from Asimov, Heineken, Niven, etc. I know that these are expensive, so probably wouldn’t sell as well as a standard hard-cover would, but on the plus side, those publishers only deal in leatherbounds, so wouldn’t require a deal for paperback, ebook, or audio. Of course, I’m saying this with no knowledge of what their publishing models are like, so maybe it’s not doable. But hey, I’m a sci-fi fan, so I’m all about dreaming and hoping!

I wholeheartedly agree with this, and I’d be willing to buy a leather bound trilogy as well. I’m picturing a stylistic logo of the heaven craft, with the title “Bobiverse” and underneath that, either “The Complete Trilogy” or “The Original Trilogy”. Basically taking itself way too seriously, which would be perfect for this series. Especially if some silliness is hidden on the cover as well. Maybe some more stylistic artwork of The Almighty Boooooob as well.

No pressure Dennis but I cannot wait for the 3rd book to be released.

Honestly when I was checking out book, the “bobiverse” in the title made me not take it seriously. When I listened to Ray’s sample and the everything he was reading, I knew I wanted to purchase the book.

I just finished book two yesterday and man, I absolutely love the world that you have created. From the pragmatic approach to space travel to the Fermi paradox.

I want to be selfish and ask to keep making Bob books but I can’t wait to see what else you come out with.

Any reason why book 2 doesn’t have Kindle Page Flip enabled while book 1 does? Page flip makes it a lot easier to go back and check the dates of the chapters to keep track of what knowledge the current bob would know.

Can’t wait for book 3, but what I’d really love is a video game with all the amazing exploration of the series along with programming AMIs / cloning bobs to build up a Bob empire.

    1. No idea about the page flip thing. I’m not involved in the actual publishing part.

As for the game idea, I’ve had some inquiries, which I’ve steered on to my agent. Nothing firm yet, though.

I look forward to many more Bobiverse books!! It’s a niche I’ve been wanting for years. I know you like to tease the technical aspects of things without getting bogged down but some more treatment of bootstrapping bottlenecks and resource allocation would be fantastic i.e. How much longer should the printers be making mining bots before turning their attention to making another printer, Bob, or AMI. This fascinates me and would be great as an appendix or directly in the story. Thanks!

  5. Hi Dennis,

Way off topic, but very pertinent.

Your audible books don’t like to sync with iPods. I learned the fix by several very annoying conversations with Amazon customer service, so I’ll save your fans some trouble by sharing what I learned.

On the Audible website, there are two modes for downloading: Format 4 & Enhanced. Format 4, usually the default, is the problem. Kind of like Murphy’s law, you know. When you download to iTunes the book plays on a desktop, but if you sync to an iPod you get static.

There are absolutely no links that even hint to a fix – either on Audible or elsewhere on the Interweb. Only by meandering politely through a maze of Amazon customer service people by telephone, repeating your entire name and address again and again, does a solution appear. Finally, a smart guy will pick up the phone and reveal the five second fix to the patient listener. Ugh.

Audible still hasn’t added “All These Worlds” to their site to allow for pre-orders.
This is very frustrating. I know I can’t make August get here any quicker, but I really want to add this title to my pre-orders ASAP!

    1. I did a quickie analysis based on timing for book 2. It was about 1.5 months from when I submitted the final version until they announced a preorder, and the preorder announcement was about 1.5 months before release date. I don’t know which one is more significant, but we can consider them “minimums” for the sake of argument.

Release date for book 3 is mid-Aug (more or less), so that would place the pre-order announcement towards the end of July. I submitted book 3 mid-April, so that would place it at the beginning of June. So we’re now inside the envelope. OTOH, June 1st to July 22nd is a big range. Probably doesn’t help much. 🙂 I have to believe, though, that Audible will want to set the pre-release sooner rather than later, so my bet would be end of June. And no, I don’t have inside knowledge. I could just ask, but that would be cheating.

Hello. I’ve commented in the past how good the books are, so I’ll get right to my point… apologies in advance the length of this comment!

Actually, this isn’t so much a comment on the book as a specific question. (One which should really go on a fan forum, but I don’t know of one… perhaps it’s time for one? Hint, hint.)

Anyway, I’m only up to chapter twenty something of Book 2 so far so, please everyone, no spoilers! However, since Book 1 I’ve wondered about a particular aspect of the VR environments the Bob’s create for themselves – the veracity of the memories they’re basing it on.

My question crystallised during the scene when SPOILER Bill is introduced to Henry by Linus, and Bill inwardly remarks on Henry’s shorter but “more compact” build and how Bill felt unused to seeing such a fit and healthy looking physique after spending all his time in the presence of other Bobs who, by implication of this remark, are not gym bunnies!

To explain what I’m getting at, I’ll point out the obvious: Original Bob was human. Bob is a computer. Original Bob’s memories were digitised and became Bob. But Original Bob is no where described as having had a photographic memory and human memories are quite fallible, so Bob’s digital memories from when he was a human are going to be equally fallible. Human memories are particularly fallible when it comes to self-image. For example, many parents with overweight children never realise their children are, in fact, overweight until a medical practitioner points it out. Many individuals fail to appreciate they’ve got a beer gut. It’s a noted fact of human self-perception that most of us can’t see ourselves as we really are, but are blinded by our own imagined self-image.

Thus, when Bob creates his avatar or his VR self, surely it must be inaccurate? Would he faithfully recreate a beer gut, a slightly drooping eyelid, a crooked front tooth, or a pattern of skin blotches at the hairline? Surely not. Surely VR Bob is going to be the perfect, Hollywood hero version that Original Bob always pictured in his mind’s eye when imagining himself? The George Clooney or Tom Cruise version, with a chiselled profile instead of the slightly fattened jawline; with the steely glint in the eyes instead of the vaguely worried look.

There was never any suggestion in Book 1 that Bob was provided with images of his human self, or had access to a database that contained them. Neither was there any suggestion that the sum total of the World Wide Web was downloaded as a reference library. He’s got what Faith gave him, and I don’t think they’re going to give him images of some of the paradisical locations that some of the Bob’s have used for their VR.

Thus, all these creations, from the physical appearance of the Bob’s to Riker’s recreation of the Enterprise bridge to Spike the cat are all products of Original Bob’s imperfect human memory and are, by definition, inaccurate.

This includes Admiral Ackbar (I don’t think Faith would include an image of him in their database!) because even if I had the skills of a portrait artist, I would not be able to recreate Ackbar accurately. I would get things wrong. He might be a recognisable Ackbar, but plenty would be wrong with him. Same goes if I tried to create a portrait of myself without access to a mirror or any photographs. I would get my own face and physique wrong, just as Original Bob would.

So, what does VR Bob really look like? Would Bob’s own mother recognise him?

Sorry again for the enormous comment (cough need a fan forum cough) and thanks for reading if you stuck it out, this far.

    1. You are correct. Human memory isn’t a camera. Bob has the same chance of getting his image right as you or I would of drawing a self-portrait from memory. Assuming some artistic talent. But since all the Bobs are working off the same memories, no one is going to complain.

Who can say, other than Dennis, that Robert Johansson did not have a photographic memory? Wikipedia mentions that eidetic memory is not frequently found among adults, so perhaps Bob has hyperthymesia, a condition, also according to wikipedia, where one is able to remember very intricate details of their own personal life.

Even if Bob did not have perfect recall, there is research to suggest that despite our inability to recall memories with perfection, those memories are there, stored in our brains as engrams. Some researchers have suggested theses engrams are stored in redundantly in multiple parts of the brain.

The problem may be that the mechanism by which we recall those memories is imperfect.

Here is my take on why Bob’s memories are now easily recalled as well as accurate:

When Bob’s brain was scanned to create Bob the replicant, all of his memories, stored as memory engrams in the organic medium of neural pathways and patterns were accurately transferred into digital storage and are now available for processing in the quantum cores. Replicant/AI Bob now has extremely fast, perfect and accurate recall of his memories. Problem solved!

I’ve purchased both your books from Audible. Is it possible to have Audible provide PDF downloads of the Appendices (list of terms, Cast of Characters and Genealogy)? These are not included in the audiobook but are a part of the paperbacks. I’d like to avoid having to buy the book twice? I feel like the appendices would be helpful in following the characters and some of the terminology.

I’ve been reading sci-fi for several decades now, since college. I was very fortunate when I started to have a room mate who was well versed in the classics. He would tell me what series to read next and never steered me wrong. Those first few years were magical with every book being excellent. But the day eventually came when I’d read all the classics and I had to wade out into the jungle on my own in search of good books. The boon in self published books has not helped. Frankly, there’s a lot of trash out there.

These books, however, are first rate. I love it when someone takes a simple idea, like self replicating probes, and explores where that idea might lead to. These books are well written with believable characters that I can identify with. One of the lessons I’ve learned in reading good books is if you don’t care about the characters, you won’t care about the book. I’m eagerly anticipating book three in August!
