And It’s Done

It’s the 20th, and I’m now “published”. Of course, I was published when I put out Outland, but this time I have an agent and a publisher.

And I suddenly realized that I have some things I need to do. For instance, I have a mailing list. It’s not a big mailing list, but that’s not the point. The five or six people on my list presumably would like to know when a new book comes out. Okay, I’ll get going on that.

I’ve also discovered a big disadvantage of being “published.” I don’t own the Amazon account through which Legion is posted, so I can’t log on multiple times during the day and obsessively check my sales. Oh, wait. Maybe that’s a good thing.

Well, anyway, the adventure begins.

ETA: Audible has supplied me with a link to a sample from the audiobook Have a listen:

This audible book is responsible for my lack of sleep last night and my personal preference of buying books after the completion of the series. Must have more..Now..

Write more, or i’ll key your shit…

    1. ok, uh, thanks? 🙂

Seriously, though, the second one is written, the third is half-done. Just have to work out how and when we’re going to get the second one edited and published. The blurb for #2 is under the LEGION posting.

Whatever you do, please please don’t make the mistake some authors do when work on the audible gets the green light.. stay with the same narrator and the narrator for the first book nailed it perfectly.

I agree wholeheartedly. I just listened to Legion this week and I love it! And Markdsm is entirely correct. The reader for the first book was perfect. So many authors don’t care about that, thinking that it doesn’t matter, and don’t care who reads their book. I guarantee that one book read badly will seriously hamper sales of the audiobooks that follow in the series.
You are now one of my favorite authors, I loved that book that much. Can’t wait to see more.

          1. Ray has already expressed his desire to do the next books. And you can bet I’ll be pushing for that.

      1. Dennis,

I have only just this moment finished the audiobook “We are Legion”

Wow! I listen to at least three to four books a week from the Scifi genre and I have to admit that over the last 10 years nothing, and I mean nothing has gripped me so well.

You owe me a full night’s sleep! I started it in the evening and it’s now nearly mid day. I simply couldn’t press pause!

You have achieved something wonderful in this story. It was quite simply fantastic from start to finsh. And definately worth every penny. Eagerly awaiting audiobook 2. then 3 then 23…

        David

With just a couple of short hours remaining on this absolutely phenomenal audiobook, I noticed your blog and just had to comment: this book is the best thing I have read in quite some time, and I am going to be raving about it to anyone who will listen. I routinely consume about two-to-three audiobooks a week and was caught completely off guard by all of this–I needed an extra audiobook to take with me on a long drive, but the contents of my wish list were annoying me for some reason (119 titles? And nothing I just have to have…seriously? Sigh.), so I clicked over to new fiction, clicked a title randomly, scanned the summary, read something about uploaded consciousnesses and rogue A.I.s, saw Ray Porter’s name and Audible Studios producing, and was like, “That’ll do, pig, that’ll do.” I clicked “Buy” without bothering to sample the audio. So at some point I pushed play and thought, “Hmm…this is definitely going to be fun,” but as things progressed, I became just incredulous at how good this book was and how much I was enjoying (am enjoying it). By the time Bob finds himself squaring off with a Brazilian warship, I found myself cheering wildly at the whole spectacle and barely noticing the hundreds of miles I had left to drive. I was having a ball, and to my delight, things really were just getting started. When Ryker makes his first appearance, I was flat out blown away by how well this event was executed. At this point I was hopelessly hooked, but a nagging thought crossed my mind: “It’s a series, so there will be more, right?” It wasn’t until the next day that I dared look on Audible to see if any more of them had been released. I was hoping for at least one more. Just one! Please just one more!

    Nothing.

So now I’m slowly savoring what’s left and looking forward to the next installment. Until then, I wish you the best of success and will be recommending “We Are Legion” as one of the best Sci-fi novels I have ever encountered.

Just a quick follow-up: I savored the rest of the book for as long as possible and then started it up again last night at work.

Also, I wrote a fairly lengthy, gushing review for “We Are Legion: We Are Bob” and submitted it to Audible; however, it is pending approval, which often means that it has been rejected. I contacted the help desk, as this has happened before–I’ll post a review and then nothing, no contact from Audible, just off goes my review into the ether. But this one is different; I spent a couple of days gathering my thoughts and wanted to really do the book justice. So I got the help desk rep to put in a ticket and promise to contact me within two days.

The good news is that the Audible page for this book is blowing up with positive reviews, which is not much of a surprise. And according to Amazon, you’ve got a best seller on your hands:

      Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#5 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Science Fiction > High Tech
#25 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Hard Science Fiction
#31 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Alien Invasion
