General News

Wow, I guess I should update this.

At the moment (2016/10/19), I have the following items on the go:

We Are Legion is published and doing well. The second book, For We Are Many, is ready for editing and will be out in March/2017 (tentative). The third book, All These Worlds, is almost done, and I’m hoping for a June/2017 release.

Outland has been out for almost two years, now, and I’m getting occasional flak from fans about the sequel. I am now actively working on Earthside, and hope to have it ready for subbing by the summer. It may or may not be self-pubbed.

And I’ve just finished a stand-alone book, Singularity Trap, which is just going through beta reads. I’ll have it to my agent by end of November/2016.

That will take me to the fall of 2017 or thereabouts, at which point I will have to dip into my magical bag of story ideas for something else.

Much enjoyed Outland and hope you can release the sequel soon. Legion sounds interesting, and will watch for it. It’s a great event to have a new author writing good stuff!

We Are Legion is excellent, thank you.

    1. Thanks. And based on the text of your second post, I’m assuming you were wondering why this one didn’t show up. Unfortunately, spam is so overwhelming on wordpress blogs that most owners put all comments on ‘moderation required’. So I have to log in and approve comments before they show.

I love We are Legion! I listen to books while I work, so I go through A LOT of books. I listen for 8+ hours every day. Some I enjoy and forget about after a day or so. Some I slog through as they aren’t so good, but it’s background. Books I find totally boring get turned off and ignored. But We are Legion, I enjoyed, and have thought about daily for a few weeks after. Not many books capture my imagination and has me this excited about a sequel. I even tried to rush my husband to finish his current book so he could “read” Bob. ๐Ÿ™‚ But he only listens a couple hours a day during his commute. Excitedly looking forward to having “Bob” back! Thank you for adding a spark to my day.

I have quite enjoyed We Are Legion, though I cursed your name briefly this morning after finishing it. How soon can one expect a sequel? Are we talking speed approximate to Stephen King or George R. R. Martin? On the whole, I really appreciate your efforts. I shall recommend this one to other people, assuming other people care what I think. You may be on your own in that regard.

My suggestion is to start with the end. That way, you know how your story needs to begin to get to the end, you know where the most climactic moment needs to be, and you know what you’re working towards. An appropriate ending is possibly the most important thing a story can have.

I just finished your book, and I loved it. Unrelated, but somehow totally related: I started playing a game called Factorio. If you haven’t played it, you should definitely check it out. It so perfectly captures the struggle of Bob mastering automation, spreading out, and eventually achieving much higher levels of automation and abstraction all from a very simple set of starting rules.

You sir, have stumbled upon a potential long lasting series as well as a potential movie or tv show… anxiously await your next few Bob books.

  1. Mr Taylor

Legion reminds me of Jack Nicholson’s opening lines in The Departed, “I don’t wanna be a product of my environment. I was my environment to be a product of me”.

You’ve embraced self indulgence and created an open ended expedition in what us nerds want to see in a book. None of that humanistic crap, just like to be left alone.. with toys and science. and that’s ok. Well I’m with you, I love it, the expression and pop references make for a great personal story written for the reader.

Where it is leading to ultimately is the realization that the humans being rescued are as useful as the Deltans being gorilliized and most of the efforts to save them are distractions from what really matters.

The banta and cooperation between the Bob’s.

Diversification of the bob race, uncluttered by bodily juices and weight gain and sports… pure productivity and expression of the self.

Thanks dude, listened to it in three sessions over two days while cleaning out my garage.

I will buy book 2 as soon as it is out and if you ever get around to hardcover set I’ll buy special editions if you’d sign them.

    Cheers

    Jayson

    Dennis,

We Are Bob is by far my favorite sci-fi book since Ready Player One. I started listening to the audiobook and my wife would hear pieces of it and it really piqued her interested. Even though I’d gotten more than half-way through the book, I was MORE than happy to start back at the very beginning and listen with her. We are anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. Keep up the fantastic work!

So, with instantaneous communication it seems to be technically feasible for GUPPI to be able to split processing tasks between his many instances, thereby giving himself much more room, and processing power, to ‘grow’. when will earthside be release ? I can not not find any info about eartside. outland was a great book.

    1. I wish I could give an answer to that question that would stick. Stuff just keeps happening. I’m doing final edits on bobiverse#3, so that’ll be out of the way soon. Then my editor from Audible will dump Singularity Trap on my head. That’s another month. Then I hope to get Outland re-edited for Audible. Three months? After that I can start back on Earthside, which is currently about 1/3 finished.

The good news (well, to me anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ ) is that after June 30th, I’m a full-time writer, so maybe I’ll be able to get some traction.

I absolutely loved the first book and am about half-way through the second.

I keep thinking about a all of those people in stasis traveling from Earth. I wonder about the micro-biology of being kept” on- ice” for so long. What if someone was getting a cold as they were put into stasis? How much of the micro-biome of a human is relevant in a different world?

The Bobiverse series such a dynamic story that it could go in so many different ways, all without being too condescending. I echo all of the praise for this series and have recommended it to everyone.

  3. I am an audiobook junkie. I’ve gone through the Hunger Games, Game of Thrones and Outlander series, countless Zombie apocalypse series, all of J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas novels not to mention those written by Lee Child, Vince Flynn and others. The Bobiverse series is by far the best I’ve ever heard. I love the premise, the scientific content (I’m a practicing geophysicist) and, above all, the humor. Also, Ray Porter is the best performer of all! Can’t wait for Book 3.

Thank you for writing these! The wit and snark is exactly to my (and my son’s. And my daughter’s) taste. You do a great job of making each Bob unique, with also lots of callbacks that remind you they are based off the same template in the end.

Here’s to some good women in the next book. Bonus for lesbians! I never get to see my own kind. Heck, just make them Pavs, my favvvvvourite addition to book 2! I want to be them! I recently became a Bob fan and listened to both books in audio format and I’m eagerly awaiting the third installment. My 10 yr old grandson begs to listen to Bob every time we go anywhere in the car. I’ve been trying to get my husband to listen to your books as well and it just goes in one ear and out the other. This past weekend we took a road trip to my sister’s house 3 1/2 hours away and since I had a captive audience, I made my husband and the kids listen to “We are Legion (We are Bob)” all the way up there and all the way back. We had gotten about half way through the book by the time we got home. Two days later my husband told me that he needed Bob on his computer. I was very happy and immediately obliged. What’s important to note here is that my husband has brain damage and severe short term memory loss as a result of bacterial meningitis. If it isn’t of earth shattering importance, he usually cannot remember anything after an hour or so. We’re both big time sci-fi fans and I think all your Star Wars/Star Trek references helped. I just wanted to say thank you.

  4. THX my friend, so much fun! And finally somebody got spacebattles right!

Waiting for the films, that would be so much fun on screen, especially the bobs vr scenes!

  5. The end of BOBverse say it isn’t so. Great series loved it from the first chapter. Hate to have it end.

I am in the middle of book 2 and the joy I am getting from “Reading” (auditory so audible is my prefered poison) Is of the order of the Star Trek universe. You have managed to explore from your point of view where we should be as a species in total when we are to reach the stars, with as few plot holes as possible. Good work on that! A I will refrain from writing anything in detail at the moment, as I am halfway through your bobbiverse works, but I can safely say that there is a lot to build on. Thank you for it. Expect more money coming your way because as nerd has become the new cool, you have captivated that emotional amalgamation of practicality and aspiration. 7. Dennis,

Loved the first two Bobiverse books and have just started to read the third but had some dรฉjร  vu – the first para is almost identical to the third para of book 2 . .

    Regards,
    Phil.

    1. That’s deliberate. It’s the same scene, more or less, except now Bob is physically there. Sort of.

  8. Dennis,

Your Wikipedia stub entries need filling in – do you want me to do the basics?

    Regards,

    Phil.

    1. I’d appreciate it. Wiki is clear that authors shouldn’t do their own entries.

  9. Dennis,

For book 1 this doesn’t make sense:

“We came into the solar system at 5% of C, decelerating at a steady 2.5 g. We had carefully calculated our trajectory and approach speed so that we appeared to be arriving from Epsilon Eridani. A projection forward would have us pass very close to the sun, still moving at about 0.1 C.”

5% is 0.05 C – so the ship is speeding up!

    Regards,
    Phil.

    1. Yeah, I probably meant .01 C. I’ll have to see if I still have my notes on that scene. Thanks.

  10. Love the Bobiverse! I have listened to them multiple times now on Audio books, and am hooked. I hope you do more.

I love the VR scenes – Still trying to figure out what my VR would be, but would definitely have Jeeves, Guppi and all the bar updates.

Could be fun to do a version of the VR in SecondLife or similar. . Issue all fans a Bob AV and have a fan moot.

I love all the reflections on mortality and the nature of the soul. Sharing book 1 with my spouse, and stop the audio every few minutes to talk over some cool idea or concept.

Love the tech, and of course the story.

    Long live Bob.

Sign me up to be Replicant!

I have just got to the point in We Are Legion, where Bob is replicating himself, and my son SO wants me to start the audiobook over so he can listen to it from the start. I am thoroughly enjoying the book. I love science fiction that makes me think about things in a new light. I don’t think I would have survived as a replicant. I think would have gone crazy with loneliness event though I do like my alone time. Or I guess I would have created someone to talk to like Bob did with his cat and Gupi. I wouldn’t want to try though.

Thats all. As i read, well as i listened to your trilogy, i couldnt help but have visions of an amazing graphic novel coming in to form. Anyhow, just a thought. Again, thanks so much for what you do, you truly have a gift.

Cant wait for more of your stuff to be available on audible. I like the narrator. If he isn’t available use Wi Wheaton.

We completed hearing the audible versions for the three Bob book trilogy. Could you provde an updated schedule for the next in that series plus a brief description of your other offerings coming sooner rather than later?

There seems to be quite a time lag in getting them out for some reason.

    1. My blog entry here: http://dennisetaylor.org/2017/08/10/some-updates-on-well-everything/ goes into some detail on my upcoming writing plans.

I don’t recall if I’ve dropped a note in here already or not, so if I haven’t I’m correcting my mistake.

I stumbled across the Bobiverse completely by accident, and boy am I ever glad. Thank-you.
I turned my kid and a few friends into fans of yours too!

Can’t wait for more installments in the Bobiverse!

You might say these books will be…. Legion.

(this is why I’m not a writer)

Super looking forward to the next installment.

    So… About Earthside publishing…

Would like to see going to greenhouse Earth and opening a small portal left…

  11. We just finished the Bobiverse trilogy and we are really sad to see it end! We love the characters, we love the writing, we love the story and creativity and the humor and references and… Everything. How did you make me feel emotionally attached to a batpig alien man?!
I hope there is more to come of this series! We’re keeping our eyes open for more from you!

I don’t mean to sound like a broken record–as many fans have already said this, but damn! I love these books! I put off finishing the third Bob book because I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for you to add more to the Bobiverse. Thank you so much for your creation and writings. Keep up the awesome!

I grew up reading SF in the 1950’s, Heinlein my favorite among many authors. SF faded away but then I was caught in the Bobiverse for three novels. What a creative and enjoyable series of work; the product of a insane mind that I hope continues to give us more and more. In my late seventies, I begin a return to SF and, by the way, I travelled the entire Bobiverse via listening to the books via “Audible”……..the performance was as sterling as the author’s effort. Best I have seen since “Stranger in a Strange Land” and thanks.

You have some serious talent, fellow earthling. I look forward to finding stories outside the Bobiverse and I will devour them like an Outsider.

I got We are Legion on a whim and so completely enjoyed the whole series and felt it to have a truly satisfying ending. I was thrilled to see and get and listen to The Singularity. I will get Outland now as well. Thank you for these fun and engaging stories. You never fail to give a solid story with wonderful charactors and something out of left field. I commend you on you work and successes. I look eagerly forward to more of your work.

    Hi Dennis!

Iโ€™m a huge fan and would love to offer you my photography services should you ever need them (portraits, book art, etc)! My website is http://www.voalaska.com, please message me anytime.

    1. Thanks, appreciate it. However, I’m not self-published now, although I was for my first book. So I don’t handle any of the non-writing aspects of the business. Generally I just point inquiries in the direction of my agent.

Dennis, it seems like there would be a lot of humans who would chose to become replicates instead of dying, I was really curious how the bobs would handle it. Would they prevent power hungry / evil people from transitioning, and if so how.

If anyone could become replicates, what would happen?

    Just food for thought.

    1. I actually deal with this issue more directly in “The Search for Bender.” The bottom line is that a human has the choice of becoming a corpsicle when they die and possibly being revived at some future point, or getting sliced and diced and having a copy of them created as a replicant. Which would you choose?

[Sorry to “necro” this thread… I couldn’t help but weigh in.]

Not even a question… I honestly don’t understand how it is for anyone. How is existence so unbearable that anyone would willingly choose oblivion (of course I know hundreds or thousands of people choose oblivion everyday the world over, so I guess I’m talking more about an at least mediocre, not overtly or constantly painful existence)? Personally, I feel I would take any decent existence, for any length of time, over non-existence. Feels like a no-brainer to me.

Also, I think by comparison being a meatsack is clearly the worst thing ever. The ability to repair, not even considering the ability to upgrade and transform, one’s physical presence is worth the price of admission alone. That’s my opinion at least, though I don’t know how anyone could debate it.

So… eternal life for me please. Thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚
